Resurrection and the life,

you are worthy to be praised! Praise to you for the creation of the heavens and the earth.  Praise to you for the creation of all people in your image. Praise to you for rescuing our ancestors in the faith as they languished in slavery in Egypt.  Praise to you for the words of the prophets that call for justice and peace. Praise to you for the life of Jesus, who came and lived among us showing us in tangible ways what your kingdom looks like.  Praise to you for your ultimate sacrifice upon the cross and the glorious resurrection from the tomb. Praise to you for your Spirit that continues to move among us. Praise. Praise. Praise!

Resurrection and the life,

how are we doing today?  You and me? How is the relationship faring that you established with me in the waters of new birth?  You are steadfast in your love. You provide for my daily bread. I, on the other hand, have not always lived up to my end of things.  I am broken. I do not love as I ought. I do not love as you love me. I am in need. Come and resurrect my life again this day with your forgiveness, love, and mercy.  Breathe new life into my heart so that I may reflect your life to others.

today is a new day, a gift from your timeless hand.  It holds promise because of your grace alone. Your mercy provides a fresh slate of possibility for my living.  Let me see beyond my weakness, struggle, and perceived powerlessness. Allow me to receive what you offer not only for living an abundant life but also for the sake of others beyond myself.  Create in me a channel of your love and care.

Resurrection and the life,

I awoke this morning to the sound of an annoying alarm.  After hitting the snooze button a few times, I resign myself to the fact that I need to get up.  I want to remain in the warmth and comfort of my bed. I can’t. This day is now upon me and it is time to enter it.  Give me the strength so to rise. Remind me that this day comes as a gift from your loving hand. Relieve my tiredness and lethargy with renewed energy.  Allow me to live and love to the fullness, following in the steps of Jesus.

Resurrection and the life,

I would be lying if I didn’t say that I have my doubts.  It feels wrong but it is true. It can be so hard to believe in your life when I find myself threatened by death.  Thomas is not the only doubter who wants proof. Graceful God, in these moments I am thankful for your steadfast love.  You remain and continue to believe in my life, even when I had difficulty returning the favor. Thank you, Life of my life, for staying with me through the time when my doubts push me to deeper faith.

thank you for your Spirit that lives in my life.  Like the wind, it blows where it wills. Like the fire it gives off light and warmth.  Like a tempest, it is filled with power that resists taming. Like a song it can inspire movement and action.  Blow. Burn. Turn. Sing.

Resurrection and the life,

at times life seems unfair. Good people – family, friends, ourselves – suffer from a variety of ailments, anxieties, fears, and uncertainties.  I know in my heart that your love and grace come as gifts to all and that the sun shines on both the good and evil. I get that. Yet, there is this nagging contradiction that somehow goodness doesn’t make a difference.  Except that it does. It makes a difference in the quality of the life that we are privileged to live each day. Seeking your goodness brings joy to life that transcends the limitations. It also moves in the direction of peace and wholeness.  Direct my feet down these paths.

AT THE START OF THIS DAY, I OPENED MY EYES AND SAW A NEW DAY.  THANK YOU FOR THIS OPPORTUNITY TO LIVE ANOTHER DAY. EMPOWER MY LIVING SO THAT IT MIGHT HONOR YOU AND SERVE MY NEIGHBORS.  AT THE CLOSE OF THIS DAY, MAY I FIND THE STRENGTH TO TRUST YOU AS I CLOSE MY EYES AND REST IN YOUR LOVE.

give me the courage and wisdom to see life as you do.  Let me look into the eyes of others, especially those who are different on the outside from me, and see your face.  Inspire me to actions of hospitality, compassion, and care for them.  When I can’t understand where another person is coming from let me not dismiss or judge them.  Align me with your love so that I might live the life that you intend.

Living God,

you are beyond my understanding.  So grand and beautiful is the creation that you have made.  So unpredictable and terrifying is your creation as well.  Growth and decay, Life and death; we know these contradictions on a personal and corporate scale.  Sometimes, it is too much for us to take in.  In these moments, empower us to trust in your eternal and loving care.
